Past Switch On Stars

There's been a Switch On ceremony every year since 1934 - except during World War II - take a look back through the years!

Each year, the Switch On of Blackpool's world famous illuminations heralds the start of the busiest season of the year.

the Blackpool Illuminations Switch On

Switch On has been an event in it's own right since Lord Derby first flicked them on in 1934 and always attracted a huge crowd - whether it's been carried out by Royalty, a sports personality, the famous face of the day, or even a racehorse when Red Rum did the deed in 1977.

Each year, the Switch On of Blackpool's world famous illuminations heralds the start of the busiest season of the year.

In years gone by the famous Switch On switch was part of the ceremony which took place in front of the Town Hall near North Pier.

Later, as the event grew, it moved to Central Car Park, and now enjoys a new venue on the impressive Tower Festival Headland on the Comedy Carpet.
