Earlier Daily Switch On Times

The time when the Illuminations come on and go off varies slightly throughout the weeks and months. They’re on longer at weekends and each week lighting up time gets slightly earlier, as it gets dark earlier and the nights get longer. Think about it in blocks of a week. When there’s a time change it’s from Friday night until the following Thursday.

  • At the end of British Summer Time when the clocks go back an hour, the Lights are turned on at 5pm.
  • From Friday 17 November when Christmas By the Sea begins, the lights come on at 4.30pm!

Traditionally the Illuminations always used to finish on the last weekend of October half term. An extra week was added in 2014 and was so successful that it was continued. They always start on the Friday at the end of August bank holiday week. Then the Lights were extended right the way through Christmas and the New Year – through Lightpool and the Festive Season!

The switch on times for each day of the season are listed individually in the Events Calendar. You’ll also find hundreds of other things there to do on the Fylde Coast.

  1. Does anyone consult on the actual lights…?
They seem to be the same year after year.

Kind of looking like Blackpool, neglected, and, old.
Seems a shame the public aren’t consulted more on these things.

    1. To make a significant change to the existing catalogue of displays there would need to be multi-million pound investment. Anyone got deep pockets?

  2. Sorry but several things here:-
1- the lights are supposed to be publicly funded.
If this is indeed true, then the lights will shut off when energy bills increase.

2-I have noticed more and more creepy symbology in these lights, and, now we have the one eye symbol.
    It doesn’t go unnoticed.

3-The installations are tacky. At some point it’s important to move with the times.
You could have a kids section, and, a section aimed at adults. Sooty and sweep was great on its day, but how many years ago..?

    1. I agree with all of the above.
It’s yet another example of those higher up, making the decision, without consulting what people want or actually like.

These lights are highly symbolic in places, and, other than that, the others represent Blackpool well.. Dated, and, tired looking.

  3. Hi, I love the lights, they are an amazing part of Blackpool but are there are concerns for the amount of energy wasted on them per year? I mean there’s a lot of energy that they are using, it’s also on for 3 months so they use lots of electricity. I think it would be better if they were solar paneled. Does anyone agree?

    1. All things are a question of balance – lots of things use a lot of energy – including surfing the internet! All steps have been/are taken to reduce the energy consumption. For example, using low energy LEDs throughout.

  4. Will the trams be running later than 7 o’clock during the october half term for travelling through the lights. Also will they have the trams that are lit up
This year with the Covid thanks

    1. Heritage Trams tours are running from this weekend, but you have to pre-book in advance. As far as I know the Illuminated ones are running too.

  5. Wednesday14th Nov I see that the lights are on again well passed the end date. How long will it be before they are on24hr x7 x365.
Has Blackpool no concern for the cost or even the planet?.

  6. I have booked a family room for nov 23rd 2018 , it is a weekend break and I want to know if any of Blackpool Xmas lights will be on , or will there be any lights on at all .
    Kind regards
    Leanne Meredith

    1. Hi Leanne, Blackpool Christmas Lights begin on Saturday 1 December. Blackpool is always bright and lively all the year, but I’m afraid there won’t be any actual Illuminations shining.
