A fun family evening out that’s absolutely full of atmosphere.

You can cycle as much or as little of the route as you like, or just come along for a walk to soak up the atmosphere. There’s no competition about it – just a race to have fun!

It’s the night just before Switch On when the Illuminations are checked, and it’s now a great big free event. The promenade is completely closed to traffic making it the one day when you go down the middle of the road in safety!

Join the route anywhere between Starr Gate at South Shore and Red Bank Road at Bispham in the north. You can ride or walk in either direction and join in at any point on the promenade so you can enjoy as much or as little of the course as you like.

It will still be light when the promenade closes to traffic, and it gets busy from the beginning.

Tens of thousands of cyclists descend on Blackpool Promenade for the annual Ride the Lights event. It really is a big thing that holiday makers and Fylde Coast residents alike enjoy along with visitors for the evening.

Cycle through the Pleasure Beach

Back for the second time by popular demand is the cycle through the Pleasure Beach.

The gates will be open from about 7.30-10pm (times approximate) for you to ride through the park, with entertainment from a live DJ set.

Blackpool Pleasure Beach staff have kindly volunteered their time to give you this fantastic experience.

Road Closures for Ride the Lights

The Promenade will be closed for the full length of the Illuminations between 6pm and 10pm on Tuesday 29 August 2017.

Traffic will be diverted off the Promenade between Red Bank Road at Bispham and Squires Gate Lane at Blackpool South Shore.

Pennystone Road and Beaufort Avenue from Pennystone Road to Red Bank Road will also be closed. Traffic will be diverted along Fleetwood Road, Devonshire Road, Whitegate Drive, Waterloo Road and St Annes Road to Squires Gate Lane.

Honestly, anything goes, so go to town with your own personal light show and really get into the spirit of the event. Lots of people wear fancy dress, and decorate their bikes with all kinds of lights. You’ll see lots of exciting sights on the night!

Stop at the Comedy Carpet at Tower Festival Headland where hundreds congregate to enjoy the evening and look at each others creations.

Bike Doctors, CJ Cycles will be at Tower Festival Headland and at The Star Pub to help with all your cycling problems.

Bike Safety for Ride the Lights

In order to keep safe on your bike, there are a few things to remember:

  • All bikes should have safety lights
  • Riders are advised to wear cycle helmets
  • Children must be accompanied by a responsible adult
  • The tramway will be operational throughout the ride so DO NOT cycle on it
  • Marshalls and first aiders will be on hand along the route
  • Support vehicles will be on hand to assist with bike breakdowns
  • The road will be closed from 6pm and will re-open to traffic at 10pm so try to plan your ride to reach your destination by 10pm and be aware of traffic after this time
  • Access to the Pleasure Beach is at the North Gate, to cycle North to South only through the Park, with no access for pedestrians just cyclists. Please note rides will not be open during this time.

Blackpool Heritage Tram Tours will be operating the Western Train, Fisherman’s Friend Trawler and HMS Blackpool Frigate Illuminated Trams on Ride the Lights night.
