Tim Burton Switches On 2015’s Blackpool Illuminations
Legendary Hollywood director, Tim Burton, flicked the switch to turn on the 2015 Blackpool Illuminations.
Tim is a self-confessed fan of Blackpool and filmed his latest film “Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children,” in the town earlier in the year.
To say thank you, VisitBlackpool bosses gave him the highest honour – the chance to flick the famous switch!
The evening saw a star-studded line-up of musical entertainment wow the audience at Blackpool’s Tower Festival Headland Arena.
Some of the biggest names in British music, including The Vamps, Lawson and Professor Green, all performed for you in a brilliant night.
Before switching on the lights Tim said “When they asked me about flicking the switch I felt like Dr Frankenstein flicking on the electricity so it’s pretty cool.”
Tim added “I love Blackpool, I’d love to do another film here. It’s an amazing place.”
2015 saw the start of Blackpool’s new £2.4m Lightpool project which was paid for by the Coastal Communities Fund, Blackpool Council and LeftCoast.
The £2m grant from the Coastal Communities Fund is to help to boost the local economy, drive investment in the north and help our seaside town to thrive.
The 2015 Switch On also marked the start of a weekend-long festival – Blackpool iFest.
It included a vintage pop concert for Saturday with Bananarama headlining. A star-studded comedy night, headlined by Al Murray – The Pub Landlord, was on the Sunday night.

Why the Switch On was in September…
Each year the Illuminations Switch On is always at the end of the school summer holidays, at the end of August Bank Holiday week.
August Bank Holiday was on the latest possible date in 2015. Because it was Monday 31 August it made the Switch On weekend a little bit later than normal.
